Have you seen this wax?

I am all growed up now, and every grown man needs his own tool box. While I was going through my old things looking for tools, I found this ski wax. I was given as a gag gift to my my freshman year of high school. This Speed Powder has text on the back: "Glidewax for black bases. Apply a thin coating on each side of the groove. Iron the full length of the ski. Let cool to room Temperature. Scrape off excess wax with a plastic scraper." Then on the top right it says GP4.

To apply you shake the wax out like a pepper shaker. To me it looks like graphite, but feels very soft. Do you have any ideas? Will this propell me to new heights of athleticism? Leave a comment!

I also found this in my house....

Anyone see those boots?

Has anyone else noticed the new salomon and atomic boots that some of the world cup skiers have been using lately? If not look at this tour de ski vid at about 9 min and 30 secs to see them on George Grey. I can't get a screen shot of them for some reason so you have to check them out online. They seem pretty intense, definitely a new concept. I'll have to ask Billy Demong about them when he returns back to the states as he has been using them with some pretty good success this season.

Hopefully this weather will turn snow soon and bring back the beautiful skiing.

The Blue Whale

Happy Holidays to everyone and I hope you all had a wonderful christmas.
The title of this post has absolutely nothing to do with the vehicle that Lamonster rode in to the eastern cups, but I thought it needed to be brought up again as it was not mentioned nearly enough in his recent blog post.

The skiing in Lake Placid has been epic so far this break, and hopefully that doesn't change too much after the abismal weather that is forecasted for this weekend.

Keep training hard and staying motivated over break. These are some of the most of the important weeks of the winter to set you up for the quickly upcoming races.

As a final not I would like to give a quick shout out to the best group of 29 people that i know along with 'D Mac' David McCahill, Anna Schulz, and Ollie Burruss, my skiing and new years celabrating contingent from harvard.

Take care and see everyone in a couple of weeks.

Ski Camp and More

Ski Camp...... What a time. You really can't beat the grooming and trails. It was a great time. We were able to do some intervals along with some easy distance. One of the most influencial things we did I think was the video technique we did. Benway allowed us to use his camera and Delaney and Sarah took over! We spent many nights going through the video with everyone breaking down their technique. The improvement was amazing in the newbies!

Ski camp was all types of weather, we had sunshine, rain snow, cold, and beautiful. Of course one of the best days on snow was the last day, but all days were great with the grooming there. Though we did have some complaints from the newbies about skating three times in the row. I switched up the intervals to do the 4x6 mins early in the week and the 3x8 min classic later in the week.

I think the camp really help give everyone a little more excited for the up coming season. I know I am starting to get ready to race, and I can't wait till the season starts.

While I have been home for break, I have been able to ski with some of some fellow USCSA members. Cornell has been while represented. They have been doing intervals in the park and looking strong. Whitman will also have a few good guys. I have still be tired from camp but have been able to ski almost everyday and I did some 4x4 min intervals up the road hill at Harriett.

Below is a picture of a guy doing what he needs to get through. Thought you guys would enjoy it. Hope you all had a Merry Christmas, and you enjoy the rest of break!

I'm a skier.

First off I would like to say that I wish I had a camera. Instead, I spent all my money on ski gear this year. Now back to business.

WOW! What a week!

First off, we had our annual post-exam training camp at Mount St. Anne. I didn't get to/ force myself to train terribly much since thanksgiving, so it was great to finally get quality training. I've had too many other things to do. I not going into many details about camp, because aside from "29 of the best people ever" (<-Delaney) crowding in together at once, nothing extraordinary happened. We'd wake up, eat, ski, eat, ski eat, eat, eat some more, and then sleep. This is the most training I've done in such a short time since summer. I'll let Derrick or Matt take up the details of the camp. I was to busy eating to notice anything.

So I get back at midnight on Thrusday, due to threat of snowstorms (and then eat some more). Thankfully, the snow did some and it was glorious! I took Friday completely off. I just sat my butt on the couch and tuned into HBO for some good old fashioned veggin' out. The next day is for gift shopping, which came to a successful conclusion. Later that night, my friend Andre and I decide to go out the next day and do the Eastern Cup race at Trapps. I read about it on FasterSkier. Not only would it be a great opening race, but I would be going up agianst the likes of people such as David Chamberlin and Andrew Johnson. Who could pass this up?

We meet at 7:30 am and load up the van, which will henceforth be referred to as the Blue Whale. Dispite the road conditions, we make it to Trapps without incident in under an hour. Being number 415 on the starting roster gives you a lot of time to play with. Essentially, we got there at 9am and our start was at 1pm. In that time me met many old Vermonter friends, and a few odd New Yorkers. Your may know them as Jusin Tetlow and Jess Snyder. Jess made an impressive 3rd place finish for her age category, while Justin complained about how we don't plow our roads in Vermont.

I went into the race knowing it was stacked with all those olympians and D1 skiers. My plan was to go out at a decent pace and try to hold it. Oh, I forgot to mention that it was bilzzard conditions up till the start of the race, then it was just plain snowing. The tracks were soft, but they had a firm base underneath. The start was downhill for a K, then pretty much the rest of the race was uphill. I remember being a pretty good climber from last year, so I attacked the first hills with gusto. As they would plateau out I would get into a nice, powerful V2, and then fly through the short switchbacks which popped up throughout the race.

Interesingly enough, I felt much more comfortable with the V2 in this race than with my climbs. The major reason for this was that my legs bonked out after the first 5k lap. I thought of two great excuses for this: camp tired me out more than I let myself believe, and my knee injury which didn't allow me to do much leg exercises till school started. I did notice that my good leg was being used in the V1 much more than my bad leg, which resulted in liqid buring agony in my right quad. Not only do I have to do more strength work on my legs, but I have to correct this imbalance that has shown up. Meanwhile, my core and arms felt ABSOLUTELY FINE. GRAAAAA!!!!

Subjectively, I felt satisfied overall. There is definately room for improvement. Oh hey, results are up.

http://www.nensa.net/results/index.php?io_view=events.show_results&event_id=263

I got 130/182. I beat a few names that I thought would beat me, and I am right behind some names of which I know are good skiers. I notice that my 10k time is only a bit faster than my 15k time of old, but this course is nothing like I've skied in college so far. I'm only ~8 minutes behind David Chamberlin. I'll say this is a good start, knowing that I've some off a relatively intense week of training.

So begins the 2009 season of Clarkson Skiing for me. I hear the scheduel of events is up, go check that out.

I just want to mention a few more things. Mad Props to Ryan White of the Colchester Nordic Ski team. Thats a good result for the place you are now. Also, the Blue Whale stopped at Cold Hollow Cider Mill to stock up on "Legendary Cider Donuts". Delicious. Then Andre and I played darts when we got back home.

Phew, that's a lot of typing. I'm done.

P.S. I crushed JT.

This title is meaningless.

Just a quick update. Yes we are still here.

Team training is for only those with a core made of hard (hardcore!). Doing roller-ski intervals in the dark, near-freezing temperatures, snow falling on you, wheels kicking up mud everywhere... we definitely earned some snow today. Alas, its hard to find time to get in good training now-a-days with projects being due and exams coming up.

On the bright side, we go to Lake Placid this Saturday for some shopping/ skiing at Mount Van Holvenburgh! (<-- did I spell that right?). After that is exams and then ski camp in the motherland; Quebec!.

Also, new team hats are here! Kudos to Matt Delaney!

I'm sure Derrick and Matt will have some action-packed updates in the near future. Keep an eye out.

-Lamothe

P.S. These pom-poms on the hats are totally wicked.

First Day on Snow + Ski Swap

Couple of big things happening while my Thanksgiving break has already started days ago. First Delaney, Drew, and Alicia stayed at my house for the annual HF-L Ski Swap. It was a good turn out, though not like the past few years. With the economy down, some people may not buy that extra pair of skis. Even still, many skis were sold! It was good to help people pick out what exactly they are looking for. You feel good giving out some advice. The used section also was a good turn out. There were a ton a boots, though not many skis for the smaller skier. I might of had a field day.

Also like I said, I had my first day on Snow!! It was great. This is skiing, so much better than rollerskiing. Yesterday I scraped my rock skis and brushed them out a bit. Then I put on my good ski boots and went around my back yard. It went pretty well so I decided to go through the park. North Meadow was pretty good. The skiing again was not great, but it was better than most of those first days on snow. My heart rate was high on snow. I tried to go easy, but the first 20 mins was rough. I settled in soon though.

Today I went to ski, but the weather warmed up and the park did some work on trails to hurt the snow cover. So I went out for a rollerski. Once you ski on snow you really do not want to go out and rollerski any time soon. I did need a workout though. So I did 3x8 mins. I felt good, I am starting to get closer to race ready. I now only need more snow haha.

Later on this week I plan on going to Salmon Hills with my buddy from UNH. They have been getting some snow so it should be a fun time. So all for now. Think snow and eat lots. Happy Thanksgiving!!

You could say that I've seen bears do things even a bear wouldn't do.

So it was about 25 Fahrenheit on the drive out rollerskiing today. That is just a bit warmer than temperatures on the World cup circuit now, and they have plenty of snow! But, that's besides the point. I've never had to gear up for the cold for rollerskiing like I have this year. I usually go out in shorts and a few layers on top. Now I'm layering it up like when its mid January! Whatever, I can deal with it. At least it was sunny today!

Today was slated for a longer rollerski. We drove out to coache's new spot (Benson road?). There's nice pavement, and usually not many cars. The team started off with technique work, and then we split up into two groups. Newer people (commonly reffered to as newbies) stayed on the new pavement and did drills. The rest of us went out exploring, hoping to get a good hour in. It turned out that the group mentality got the best of us and we did something more like a tempo ski for around 45 minutes. Whatever, we need to do some of those too, don't we? We'll get up to 4 hours per session in no time...

After that little stint, my group joined back with everyone else. We did some more technique drills, and then had a team girl talk. Topics for discussion included: ski boots, World Cup skiing, XC running nationals (Rupp!), and fig newtons.

The freshmen are progressing nicely! I'm happy to see the true new skiers gaining confidence on the rollerskis. The more experienced freshmen know whats up in terms of technique. A few tweaks and they'll be pounding out the intervals in no time! We're all anxious to get on snow. Just a few more weeks...

P.S. I just want to make a shout-out to that cow next to where we parked. You're the Bull, man!

Team Rollerski!

Today was the first day the team got together and traveled out of campus for a workout. After turning in our XC running warm-ups and filling out the end-of-season evaluation forums, we piled in our vehicles and headed out to Noyes Road. If you are a regular reader (Tetlow), you probably know all about Noyes Road. I was able to get a pic of some of the guys as we were getting ready to head out for a nice little 40 min double-pole sesison.

From left to right: Moskevitz, Nadeau, Ned from Maine, and Bryan Rose. Oh yea, it's pretty dark at this time of year. Don't forget your headlamp! Personally I felt pretty strong, and everyone else seemed to be gliding along nicely. It feels like the season is finally getting under way! The only thing we need now is snow. I hear Salmon Hills is the place to be in NY now...

New season, new faces.

Hey, my first post ever! Hopefully I will have some relevant stories/ insights to share with everyone throughout the 08-09 ski season. I can't let this whole blog be biased by Riverside 9, can I?

Side note: watch out for polar bears. Global Warming is pushing them south.

True Pre-Winter Training

So this is the time of year when the training gets tough. As it turns dark by 5, the day seems over in a hurry. We have been getting out on the rollerskis, and soon we will get the newbies out on the real roads. I have also made an effort to get in the weight room and continue my ski specific lifitng. We have been doing all the drills and all the little strength stuff, but it does hurt getting in the back room and focus more on core and double pole muscles. I have included a picture of the former Clarkson skier Sam Morse who is now with the US Army.

Today we had a interesting "tuck drill" with music. I guess that is what you would call it. Coach lead us to the porter mountain trail with a boot slide against THE MATT DELANEY. Always a good time. I expect a few people to have sore hips and hip flexers tomorrow.

Soon we will have an updated roster, well as of now I guess. Saturday is also the REG and I encourge all of you to make it there to cheer on the runners (don't let some of them fool you, they are really skiers!) Snow will be flying soon so get ready!

Trail Clean Up

We have survived another year at trail clean up. I would also like to note that with Justin gone, no equipment was broken this year, so we could take our time leaving. When we woke up early in the morning (Before 8am) to head out to Higley, we saw the affects of an all night rain. I got in my car along with Drew and Delaney and we headed over to the IRC. We packed in the cars and made our way.

We arrived and split into teams to tackle the trails and the affects from the snow storm. They got 18 Inches!!!!! A small group of us took on the camp loops with Coach providing the entertainment. The entire time of the clean up, we had rain. Everyone was wet and soaked, but it does give us a guilt free skiing season.

The next day many of us were sore, perhaps from the wet jeans. I made it out anyway late in the day for a wet ski around Bagdad-South canton loop. I have been feeling good of late. Not sure if it is from the first sign of snow or what, but I am ready to take on the season.

We will get more pictures up once we get better and bringing a camera with us. We have a big team with athletes at all different levels. I am excited for what this season may bring.

Winter is coming

I have kindly been reminded by no one in particular, *Justin*, that this blog has not been updated in a while. So, I apologize to the vast world of bloggers that religiously follows this blog everyday, and you can expect more frequent updates as we are finally transitioning into official team practices and the days are becoming shorter and the nights colder. The first official snowfall of the year has come and gone already and we are looking forward to a long and snowy winter here in Potsdam and around the east.

Check back soon, and think snow :)

New Season!!

Hey every body. We are all now back at school and many of us are excited about the running season at hand. We had our first race yesterday and everyone is looking strong and fast as we head into the year. There has been a strong showing from our freshman class as well.

On the Skiing front... Delaney and I have been training while focusing on skiing! Lots of rollerskiing and explore the pavement. Yesterday I made it back over to Pumpkin Hill Road and tried to time trial it by myself. I felt good and strong, but my legs were a little heavy. I used my Marwhees which always make for some slower times as well.

Today I went with the running team over to the Hig and went running at the FLOW. Always a good time and it brings back many great memories of ski season. Chris L and I were trading stories from the past years out at the Hig.

Now we continue to look forward to the coming season and we are excited to see how the new freshman can hold up! Today was a little cooler and as any skier can tell, the snow season is near and we are ready for it!!

Runner-Up at USCSA Nationals

We just got back from Black Mountain of Maine and both the men and women came home with second place. Everyone did a great job skiing well and we all had a great trip. We had individual winners in races with Delaney and Whit while Whit was number one overall. Both teams won the sprint day with JT and Sargar coming up huge. Andy N gets my vote for the MVP as he saved the men's team by skiing fast even when others did not.
Some of the highlights of the trip come from seeing the tallest snow woman, having a cook out in the parking lot, and of course the relay finish with the Boot master himself, Matt Delaney. the video of the boot slide can be seen at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GW-8m6UJXHQ

I think we all enjoyed the season and it was a great one! Now we are enjoying this awesome snow that is left. I went out for a nice ski the other day and really enjoyed it, however just like everyone else, I am enjoying some of this extra time I now have. Although I am using this extra time for school work.
So to all of the Clarkson Nordic team, I want to say Thank You Seniors and Coach for all that you have done for us. Between guiding us, helping us, and showing us what NOT to do. You seniors will be missed. You were a huge part of this team! To our fearless speeding coach, You have done so much and we all are very thankful. This has been a great season.
Now to the members who will return next year, the work is not done. We reach some, but I stress some of our goals this year. That is great and it shows we have come a long ways and we can still improve. We need to continue to work harder and harder. I expect a lot from this team just like I do from myself. We are a great group of kids who love to have fun, but we also love to work hard. So set your goals now. It is a perfect time to take a look at the season and figure out what you want to do next year and how you are going to do it. So set the goals from the toilet bowl relays in the pool, not being the first roller ski fall of the season, all the way to being National Champs come this time next year. So I want to thank everyone for this great season! I really enjoyed sharing so much time with all of you. Good luck and enjoy!

2008 Regional Champs!!

Congrats to everyone after a great weekend of racing at the Reg. We went to New Hampshire and kicked some north east butt. The weekend started off with some 15k Classic action. The mass start always leads to some exciting times. When the race was underway, the MAN Matt Delaney took off with the Bibbster and took the ribbon. Drew Mos was the man that day and took home the 3rd spot and Andy N was not far behind. We won the 15k and then had a well deserved nap. In the afternoon, the speed kings were here. After the Qualifiers, we had three in the A final and one in the B final. We took the top 3 spots in the A final and the top spot in the B final giving us 1,2,3,& 6. The girls did great as well winning both races.
After a fast 8.5 k course, Matt Delaney proved his dominace by winning every race. Whitney won two and took home a second. Every one did well and showed that Clarkson is the team in the east. We now look on to Nationals.

Nationals will be in Maine and we all love Maine. We are all working hard these last couple of weeks to show what we can do on the top level. This is where it counts. This is where you make it hurt. So as we continue along, we are we are living by the American Flyers

Regionals...

As the team prepares for the upcoming weekend and the rest of the season here's a pic from last year to get everyone motivated.
The team celebrating last years win at regionals in Waterville Valley

League Champs

Clarkson University Nordic Team came up big this past weekend with three wins to give both the guys and girls victories in the league. JT$ was the man this weekend winning all three races. We had a big lose of Matt Delaney this weekend, but we were able to over come it. However, trust me, we are looking forward to having him back. Only one skier form another school was able to break into the top pack of Clarkson. Brian from Cornell was 3rd in both 5 k events on the icy snow. In the Sprint, Clarkson sweep the finals heat as Clarkson took 7 of the top 8 for the semis. Talbs and Brian showed off their speed to help seal the deal.

The icy snow made for some fun.

On the women side, Whitney followed suit with JT for the sweep and Sarah "Gardna!" was able to fight through some sickness to help lead Clarkson to wins.

We now prepare to do the same work with the league this coming weekend as we head to NH for Regionals. We are there to defend our title and to prove we are and always have been the team to beat. With the season coming closer to the end, the races are getting bigger. We have two more weeks of training and then it is time to show what we got. Bring IT!

Clarkson Invite

Prospect Mountain! We started the racing weekend off with a 13 k classic race. With people trying all different types of kick wax, it was a crazy start. In the end most people settled with a good kick and made it through the race. Tracks were hard to come by when it neared the second half of the race for the guys and were mostly gone when the girls came through. Andy N came up big for the men with a 3rd place finish. Matt Delaney feeling ill left the door open for other stars.

On day two, we kicked things off with a 10 k skate race. The snow was slow and soft. there were periods of blizzard snow and winds with a nice sunshiine as well. When the snow settled and the three legged race was taking shape, the Cowboy Chaday took the day by winning by over a min. I guess he still has it, haha. behind him for clarkson was myself with JT$ at my heels. Andy also had a great skate race to give him an Awesome weekend. It was fun to watch the girls race with the weather changing every five seconds. Alicia came into the finish as she appeared through the snow right before the line.

With the results in the three legged race was taking shape. Sarah teamed up with Brian Mc (Section V'er) to win the Co-ed Division. My boy John Goodwill and I took home the Male division Victory! With Delaney out for the weekend, the wins were not easy, but we took home the W in every race.
Our coach and great Leader!!!

We now are looking forward to the Division Championship at Notchview where the points count double. It will be a weekend packed full of speed with two 5 ks and the Sprints.

Clarkson Cup and Higley Hustle

Successful weekend for the Golden Knights. We started the weekend off on the far side of the Hig for the 1st annual Clarkson Sprint Cup race. We lost some of our team to a race in Maine (Matt Delaney, Justin Tetlow, Chris Talbot, Whitney Olson, and Sarah Gardner). This opened the door for some others to step up. We did it skate style and did a time trial first. Based on places we did a three wave semis. The girls had a final between Chels and Alicia. Chels came home with the Victory to Win the first Clarkson cup. Pictured below. More Pictures to come from the races thanks to her. For the guys, Andy, Brain, and myself made it to the A final. Drew "Shag" Mahoney came home as winner of the B Final. Not to exclude the strong showing by Adam.... (New Recruit maybe?) For the A Final, I tried to get out to a strong start due to narrow trails and a tight first turn. We were all right on eachother for the first lap taking it easy. When we got to the last hill I went for it. As a gap began, and I was pulling away, Brain and Andy got tangled up. I wanted to continue to push to get a hard workout in. Then the real battle began.... Andy and Brain fought to the line. As the finish line came near... Andy pulled it out. We were all looking for a boot slide.
The next day was the imfamous Higley Hustle. Last year was won by a Norwiegn..... That is how great this race is. This year there was a much bigger turn out as most of our team came with most of the SLU team as well and no Andy that was not their Club Team. For the Men the mass started went off and was full of excitment. Brain Pepper from SLU stab his ski and almost caused a crash. Andy and I jumped out and joined the SLU pack. Andy decided it would be fun to take the lead for a bit as well. As we went into the woods, Andy and I came together. As the Little kids were falling all around we managed to get through it. Everyone looked really good and strong up the last hill to the finish. Congrats to everyone.

The Maine people did well. Their results can be found at http://www.chisholmskiclub.org/chisholm_results/2007-08/07-08_results_frameset.htm

Also the results form the USCSA League Race can be found on the Results section of the page. I suggest to sheck it out. All for now... Keep skiing and get ready for Lake Placid!!!

Stand up and Be counted

Hey guys I want all of you to check this out. I thought it was pretty neat. Well it has been a while since we have posted anything. I want to first say congrats to Matt and Justin on a great job out at Nationals. They really helped the Clarkson name nation wide. Next I just want to say that snow is coming!!!! I know it sucks, but try and keep the focus. The first race is coming this weekend and then the season will be under way.

We are looking good as a team this year and I am excited to see what we can do as a team. I have some high goals for us all. It is early but what we do now can make a difference in the future. That is all for now. Lets hope for more snow and as I say for the team

"There is no Substitute for VICTORY"

First Post

For my first post I just want to say that ski season without snow is like Matt Delaney without shaved legs; hard to deal with and a little annoying. My words of wisdom are to not lose hope, it will snow again and Matt will shave his legs again. The season is young so keep up the motivation!
